Impaired Driving Card Games

Help prevent drug and alcohol-impaired driving through educational and fun card games. UDS provides two impaired driving-related card games in the toolkit. Bottles-to-Bottles, a riff on Apples-to-Apples, focuses on the issues of underage drinking and alcohol-impaired driving. Substance Aware Memory Game teaches students about the effects different drugs can have on driving.

Goal: Educate young adults on the types of drugs and alcohol effects, and foster conversations on the culture of drinking and driving.
Estimated Planning Hours: 30 minutes
Estimated Activity Hours: 5–30 minutes
Outreach or Audience: Conduct the activity in small groups or at existing outreach events where you can hold their attention for 5-10 minutes.
Activity Reward: $250

Items Provided or Needed

Toolkit items provided:

  • Bottles-to-Bottles Card Game
  • Substance Aware Memory Card Game

Extras:

  • Candy or another prize for winning

How to Prepare

  1. Have 1-2 facilitators of the game who know how to play
  2. Review the facilitator questions and have them handy

How to Facilitate

    1. Play Bottles-to-Bottles
      1. Rules are similar to Apples-to-Apples, where 3 or more people play a round, and one person is the judge.
      2. Everyone gets 3-5 green cards, depending on how many you have to go around.
      3. The judge flips over a blue card, and players put down a green card that they think the judge will choose.
      4. The judge then chooses the winner with the best green card, and the group should sit around and reflect on how college drinking and driving culture is present in their everyday lives.
      5. Play another round. The person to the right gets to judge next.
      6. Keep playing till people run out of green cards
    2. Play Substance Aware Memory Game
      1. Lay the cards all upside down with the UDS and DUDE logo facing up.
      2. Allow players to flip one UDS logo card over and one DUDE logo card up so that they see a term and a definition.
      3. Players keep flipping cards until they find the right answers (Answer Key).
      4. Tip: For quicker play, use only 4-6 terms and definitions.
      5. Adaptation: Have the terms and definitions already been faced up, and people have to just read and choose the correct match.
    3. Help students discuss alcohol and drug culture and how to overcome social norms:
      1. Ask students what type of alcohol and drug use people their age are partaking in. If you have the data, share actual behaviors to debunk misperceptions.
      2. Discuss the consequences of getting a DUI or minor in possession.
      3. Discuss the effects of alcohol and drugs on the body and brain.
      4. Discuss how to celebrate and create healthy habits.
      5. Remind your peers to always have a sober ride home.

Tips and Lessons Learned

  • When a person answers correctly or wins the game, give them a piece of candy or a prize.
