The Youth Transportation Safety (YTS) Internship Program offers college students a hands-on opportunity to engage in public safety initiatives, focusing on traffic safety research, education, and outreach. Interns may participate in community outreach, data analysis, content creation, and program development, contributing to real-world safety outcomes and growing in areas that serve their future career goals. This program is structured to meet academic credit requirements and provide meaningful experiential learning.

Why our internship?

The Youth Transportation Safety (YTS) internship program is a paid internship.  We aim to provide an opportunity for students to explore career options, apply academic knowledge and skills to the workplace, gain career skills, build resumes, and network with transportation safety professionals. YTS interns will be mentored and trained by leading professionals in traffic safety, learning positive youth development techniques, taking research into practice, and applying a public health approach to transportation safety.

While working for YTS, interns may: 

  • Complete various trainings focused on the YTS program and traffic safety history. 
  • Participate in community outreach by deploying the Teens in the Driver Seat (TDS) and U in the Driver Seat (UDS) programs.  
  • Conduct data collection and analysis, understanding youth attitudes and behaviors.  
  • Produce multi-media campaigns raising awareness of transportation-related safety.  
  • Contribute to the strategic planning and development of program resources and materials.  
  • Develop and practice communication skills within a professional setting. 
  • Attend YTS meetings and network with staff and other peers. 
  • Engage in various professional development opportunities identified by YTS staff. 
  • Gain real world experience with public and transportation safety. 

Internship Start Date: September 1, 2025

  • Interns are required to complete a total of 150 hours during a time span of 15 weeks, at minimum. Weekly, there is a commitment of approximately 5-10 hours per week with expected availability for occasional meetings during the regular business hours of Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Interns may be asked to work outside of normal business hours for special events.   
  • Some travel may be required, including attending the in-person YTS Summit in San Antonio, TX November 13-14, 2025. (Travel reimbursements will be provided for mileage, lodging and overnight meals.)
  • This is a paid internship program.  Pay details will be discussed during the candidate selection process.

Intern Qualifications

  • This Internship position is best suited for currently enrolled undergraduate students with a minimum of 24 semester credit hours completed. No specific academic background or major required. Candidates must possess a GPA of 2.5 or higher to be considered.  This position is available to students of all public and private 2-year and 4-year academic institutions within the United States. 
  • The ideal candidate will have an interest in expanding their skills in writing, communication, research, data collection, and gaining practical tools to engage all audiences. They should possess an independent work ethic. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, social media platforms, and additional web-based tools is preferred.  
  • Internship candidates must be at minimum 18 years of age.
  • Internship candidates must reside in Texas.

Academic Credit

  • Contact your academic advisor for requirements and to gain course credit.  We will support your pursuit of academic credit within our means.
