I have had friends at my campus get in trouble for driving under the influence too many times. It upsets me when I hear someone drove drunk because we work so hard to bring speakers to our school to talk about the dangers of drinking and driving.
This year I decided to bring my car to school for the safety of myself and my peers. I hit a point where I didn’t trust putting my life in someone else’s hands. Now, I always designate myself as the safe driver and ensure my peers get home safely. It’s the only responsible way to go.
I’m not going to lie – at first I thought joining U in the Driver Seat would make me seem uncool. But when I began to tell my friends that I was a member of the U in the Driver Seat’s Collegiate Advisory Board, they actually were proud of me. By being open about my involvement with the program and my work to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving I feel like I’ve really gotten people to listen. My friends actually designate DUDES when they go out to parties without me. I’m really proud of them.
