UNDERSTANDING THE RISKS
Car crashes remain one of the leading causes of death for young adults—and the impact goes far beyond fatalities. For every life lost, hundreds more are injured, many with lasting consequences. Young adults ages 21–24 have some of the highest crash fatality and injury rates nationwide, highlighting a critical need for action.
But the good news is this: these crashes are preventable.
UDS focuses on high-impact behaviors identified by campuses and research—areas where education and awareness can make a big difference:
Why It Matters
The risks students face aren’t just about driving—they’re about daily decisions:
- Looking at a phone instead of the road
- Getting into a car with someone impaired
- Walking, biking, or riding distracted in busy environments
By understanding these risks, campus communities can take action to prevent injuries, protect each other, and build a culture of safety.
