ACTIVE MOBILITY

Campus streets aren’t just for cars; they’re shared spaces. Young adults (18-25) are at higher risk for being in a crash due to distraction, inexperience, and complex campus environments.

WHY IT MATTERS

  • Texas data shows that nearly half of pedestrians involved in crashes are ages 15–39, reinforcing the relevance of targeting young adults in pedestrian and micromobility safety efforts (4).
  • E-scooter crash data show that young adults are disproportionately affected, with individuals ages 15–24 accounting for the largest share of injuries—approximately 23% of all e-scooter injuries – highlighting elevated risk among college-age users (3).
  • The majority of bicyclist fatalities occur among adults aged 20 and older (1), and micromobility injuries are disproportionately concentrated among 18–44-year-olds, including college-aged users (2).

Your Campus. Your Ride. Your Responsibility.

SAFETY TIPS

  • Slow down in campus zones—expect heavy foot and device traffic
  • Stop and yield to pedestrians and sidewalk users in crosswalks
  • Watch for scooters/bikes—especially at night or mid-block
  • Check for bicyclists before turning right

  • Heads up, eyes forward—limit phone use when crossing
  • Use marked crosswalks whenever possible
  • Make eye contact with drivers before stepping out
  • Be visible at night (light clothing, phone flashlight, reflectors)
  • Avoid walking impaired or distracted in traffic areas

  • Ride predictably—follow traffic laws and signals
  • Use lights at night (front white, rear red)
  • Ride in designated lanes or streets—not crowded sidewalks
  • Signal turns and communicate with others
  • Wear a helmet—it reduces head injury risk

  • Start slow—control matters more than speed
  • Yield to pedestrians at all times
  • Avoid riding on crowded sidewalks or high-foot-traffic zones
  • One rider per device—no passengers
  • Charge devices safely (don’t block exits, use proper chargers)
  • Park responsibly—keep paths and doorways clear
