“Cute Distractions”
Written by Leighton James
I have two little sisters. Beth is eight and Claire is 12. Claire is pretty similar to me, but Beth is something different. We (jokingly) say we don’t know where she came from. She has blonde hair, blue eyes (we all have brown hair and eyes), and you never have to wonder what she’s thinking.
Her humor and attitude started when she was pretty young. When she was younger, she wasn’t allowed to watch cartoons like Spongebob. However, at four years old, she started telling everyone in the family she wanted a Spongebob tattoo. She would even specify that it had to be real, not the “wipe off ones.”
As she has gotten older, her humor has stayed with her, but she has also developed an ability to understand things.
A few weeks ago I took her with me to a friend’s house. It just so happened that I was going to meet a guy that my family had been talking about for months. We had been really busy that day, so I was rockin’ the no makeup, bad hair day.
Before we left, I said “Ugh… I can’t go like this. I have to fix myself!”
Beth said, “Oh, don’t worry. It’s not about how you look. It’s about what’s on the inside.” I started laughing, but agreed with her and left.
As I was driving, she was enlightening me with all of her opinions from the back seat.
Beth: “He’s really cute. I think he’s your type.” Giggle.
Me: “How do you know what my type is?” (How does she even know what a type is?)
Beth: “Umm I don’t know. He just is.”
*Silence*
Beth: “Don’t be nervous. It’s not hard. You just have to talk.”
I turned to look at her, laughed and said, “Thanks for the advice.”
When I looked back up, a car’s taillights were approaching faster than normal. I slammed on my brakes to avoid hitting the car and came within inches of the back end.
Sometimes it’s hard not to pay attention to our passengers, especially when they’re cute and funny. However, the split second I wasn’t paying attention put all of our safety in danger.
We should all give our full attention to the road when we’re behind the wheel, so we can avoid as many dangers as possible.
